NORDIC LIGHTS - INNOVATION IS THE WAY FORWARD

NORDIC LIGHTS is a pioneer in supplying light technology to heavy duty equipment. The coastline of Ostrobothnia in western Finland nurses a strong spirit if entrepreneurship. Bernhard Herrmans, together with his wife Lisbeth, founded the Company on the 28 of April 1959 at the mere age of 26.

- I started by producing plastic carpets and rim tapes on a extruder I hired locally. There were three companies in the municipality making rim tapes and one of the entrepreneurs introduced me to his Finnish customers when he retired, says Bernhard Herrmans.

Bicycle components remained the main business for the Herrmans Company for several decades. Starting from the rim tape production the portfolio increased with grips, reflectors, chain guards and lights. Exports to Sweden opened in 1966 and when the Company found a solution for automatisation of the rim tape production in 1977 all of Northern Europe laid open.

The founder Bernhard Herrmans sold the company to Botnia Shipping, later Wicoria, in 1986. The Company struggled with huge profitability problems 1987-1990 and the labor force dropped from close to 110 to around 45. But the Company knew that innovation is the way forward and did not hesitate to come up with new ideas.

- In 1988 we evaluated different options for the future. The idea to start with work lights came when I participated in a leadership course in Sweden. It was a totally new area of business, a huge risk for the long term, but without big commitments you can´t achieve anything, says Lars Kronholm, former managing director 1987-2003.

In 1989 Herrmans presented the first LED-based bicycle light in the world. And in 1992 Herrmans´ Nordic Lights division started selling work lights for the heavy industry. First out was the development of the halogen work lights N100 and N200 and more and more capital was invested in the development of work lights.

In 1996 the Company gained its ISO9001 Certificate. Nordic Lights first Xenon light was introduced in 1999 with the N200HID work lamp. During 2002 the operative management together with two shareholders outside the business bought the company. 2004 followed the ISO 14001 Certificate. During 2008 the company presented both its first LED work light the N25LED as well as Nordic Lights first auxiliary driving light N1300 Xenon.

Today Nordic Lights is one of the leading suppliers Globally of Heavy Duty lighting solutions for the heavy duty industries. Among our customers are several of the leading manufacturers of heavy duty machinery. Our lights are found on applications within the mining, construction, forestry, agricultural, material handling and truck, trailer & emergency industries.
