Amperage is an informal term for electric current: the rate at which electric charge flows through a circuit. It is measured in amperes (A). Current draw is important when selecting cables, connectors, fuses, switches, relays, and power supplies. These components must be rated for the expected load and operating conditions. Excess current can cause voltage drop, overheating, equipment damage, or protective-device operation, so the product’s specified current values should be used when designing an installation.
