An IP rating classifies the protection provided by an enclosure against access, solid particles, and water. The first digit covers solids and the second covers water. Nordic Lights commonly lists ratings such as IP68 and IP6K9K; these represent different test conditions and should be quoted exactly rather than summarized simply as waterproof. An IP code describes enclosure protection under standardized laboratory conditions, not performance under every real-world exposure. Installation, cable entries, connectors, aging, damage, cleaning chemicals, and pressure can affect the result in service. The full rating and standard should be used when comparing products, especially where K-designated vehicle tests are involved.
